What is organic?
Organic foods are produced according to a particular set of standards and principles. This ensures that certified organic foods are grown as naturally as possible, and are free from synthetic intervention such as;
-
chemical pesticides
-
chemical herbicides
-
chemical insecticides
-
chemical fertilizers
-
additives in processed foods
-
genetic modification
-
growth hormones (animal products)
-
antibiotics (animal products)
Organic food also incorporates the practice of an organic farming system using a holistic farm management process. Organic agriculture also relies on sustainable methods of farming, such as crop rotation, crop residues, animal manure and mechanical cultivation.
Where did organic come from?
Historically, organic food was grown in small farms and produce could be purchased from the farmers directly, or from local markets. Organic food mainly comprised of fresh fruits and vegetables and occasionally livestock, and it was monitored by the farm itself, without any certification.
Organic and the environment
Organics have shown to have a positive effect on the environment. The lack of synthetic chemicals used in the farming process ensures that these chemicals are not released into the environment and water system, of which some can seriously harm local wildlife. There is also evidence to show that organic farms are more effective at sustaining diverse ecosystems than a conventional farm, ensuring the longevity of the land for farming for future generations. Biodiversity ensures the survival of many of the worlds species and their habitats. Studies also show that organic farms often boast the ability to produce less energy and waste per unit of yield than conventional farms.
Organics & U
The National Research Council published a study in 1993 that found diet was the major form of exposure of pesticides for children. Most conventionally grown foods contain some form of synthetic pesticide and herbicide residue, but it is still relatively unknown as to the full effects on these chemicals on the human body. However the more that scientists are learning about these chemicals, the more questions are being raised about the potential toxicity to humans and animals.
Studies conducted on conventional farmers exposed to some of these chemicals showed an association with acute health problems, such as dizziness, nausea and skin and eye problems, and often more serious health problems such as neurological and endocrinological disorders. The endocrine system is probably the most sensitive to toxicity and certain research has shown that exposure to some of these chemicals causes disruption in normal chemical signaling. This is particularly important for humans still in early stages of growth where the timing of the exposure is important.
Processed organic food is also free of artificial additives. Artificial additives are linked to health conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity.
Research suggests that organicorganic food may contain slighter higher amounts of certain nutrients, such as vitamin C and selenium, plus it is lower in nitrate levels. Organic food has also been shown to contain up to six times more salicylic acid than conventionally grown foods, which acts as an anti-inflammatory in the body and assists in preventing the hardening of the arteries.
Organics & children
It is important to remember that many studies have been conducted on adult tolerance levels, so the levels for children are likely to be far less so it would make sense when selecting food for your children who are more vulnerable to the toxic effects of these chemicals, to avoid foods that may contain them. The safe option is organic.
Organic taste
Many people prefer organic food because they consider its flavour to be more superior to conventionally grown food.
Organics today
In 2002, organic food sales in the USA totaled $9 billion, and they have since experienced a steady 17-20 percent increase in the sale of organic products. The organic food industry in Australia is still fairly young in comparison, with an annual worth of $200-250 million, but the demand is growing at a rate of 20-30 percent a year.
